Be Yourself

Since “Shake Ya Tailfeather”, everybody on this planet probably knows about Murphy Lee, Nelly’s protégé. Back when he appeared on the “Rock the Mic” remix with Nelly, we all recognized that this cat is gonna be representin’ that Midwest/St. Lunatic vibe to the fullest. But could he do it himself? Can Murphy Lee hold it down on his own?

To answer this question in the first place: Murphy Lee definitely could. A lot of tracks on this album are off the hook and will for sure burn your afterschool party as well as your local sweatboxes and the huge clubs. Peep the first single with Jermaine Dupri “What the Hook Gon’ Be” which is one of the best joints done by JD I heard in a while. Check “Luv Me Baby” with Jazze Pha and Sleepy Brown – it’s definitely gonna hit every part of your body! “This goes out” with Nelly, Lil’ Wayne, Lil’ Jon, Roscoe and Cardan is another one that goes straight to the dancefloor and rocks the crowd! Besides of that, Murphy also has other stuff to offer: “Cool With It” feat. St. Lunatics or “So X-Treme” feat. King Jacob and the Professor don’t go the same way, the beats alone prove that after a couple of seconds. And while the basic topic of this disc seem to be the chicks, Murphy also takes a close look at different things, for example on “Regular Guy”, where he explains how he fits into the whole community of people and that he ain’t that different from everyone else, or on “Gods Don’t Chill” – peep this and check whether you know that situation or not. My personal favorite on the album is “Murphy Lee” feat. Zee where Murphy focuses on one girl – for once – and shows his rhyme capability to the fullest. Wanna go back to a kick-ass dancefloor track? “Hold Up” feat. Nelly, another one of my favorites – Murphy and Nelly just harmonize perfect, and the beat is killer.

What about the word “could” in the first line of the second paragraph now? The problem is the number of guest appearances. I know that that is a matter of taste, but I just like solo albums to be more or less solo (!!) albums. Too many guests on an album force me to get the impression that the artist can’t hold it down on his own. Now that’s a real pity ‘cause Murphy Lee has got great skills and his debut album is definitely hot. It’s just more a compilation than only him. Nevertheless, the record is worth the bucks, no doubt. Murphy Lee persuades with each and every bar he spit, and if there were a couple of bars more done by him and not anybody else, it would be very, very hot. Yet, it’s just hot. But that’s what it is. If you like that Midwest thing, go run like hell for this record.

Gossip

This is the storee: Murphy Lee got some of the best free publicity of his career thanks to Bill Maher. There he was on TV, giving his usual speech about how rap is a negative influence on the youth, then he turned to his fellow comics (actually, unlike Bill, they are funny by DESIGN, not by accident) and proceeded to bitch about how incomprehensible the lyrics are. To prove his point, he cited Murph's lyrics from the smash hit "Shake Ya Tailfeather." Ironically, if Mr. Maher had ever watched Cartoon Network for five minutes, he'd know what "Thundercats" are, what "Voltron" is and why Gohan has a headwrap. On his solo debut "Murphy's Law" the young rapper shows that potential in fine style. True to the character he is, some songs like "Granpa Gametight" are so far over the top you can't help but laugh. Most rappers claim to be surrounded by a flock of girls these days but you can't help but know Murph is stuntin with quips so silly he probably DOES pull women with his natural comedy (more so than Bill Maher at any rate).

"I'm like a new deck of cards, dirt-hard to deal wit
Can't live without me and I'm hard to live wit
My toilet don't take no shit
Plus most women need Murphy Lee like a make-up kit
I'm too nice, my future read two wifes
I'm too right wit two dykes in the mirror of a new bike
I'm so da-da da-da-da
That the women don't mind comin out they drawers and bras
For the young brotha, the Young Dude, we young dudies
Yours truly, Baby Huey, Murphy Lee the schoolly homeboy!
Still cool, movies in the jacuzzi
Eatin french fries, wit belly warmers and wives
See I strive to do right but the women keep callin
They like bill collectors, they won't stop callin"

Or maybe like telemarketers? Well Murph clearly ain't putting the girls in his life on DNC. And on the lead single "Wat Da Hook Gon' Be" produced by and featuring Jermaine Dupri, the title forms an ironic conundrum that may leave you scratching your head if you TRY to take it seriously:

"[JD] But yo, what da hook gon' be? (Uh-oh!)
[ML] See I don't need no fuckin hook on this beat (Sheeit!)
All I need is the track in the background
My headphones loud, keep the blunt goin 'round and I'ma rip"

Lee is proud of his ascent to hip-hop fame, boasting how he came "from nuttin to somethin; when I say nuttin meanin pocket full of lint and buttons." He should be. Songs like "I Better Go" featuring Avery Storm and produced by Waiel 'Wally' Yaghnam showcase a talent far beyond his "school boy" age, with a narrative that's by turns somber, comic, and personal:

"Check - back in ninety-three I had it all
I was a kid, yo I grew up on the Player's Ball, shit
Born in the 80's mayne, St. Louis al-ien
Showin my jewels to prove I was the ladies man
Shake all the ladies hands, spit on the ladies pants
I'm doin the latest dance, makin the haters glance
I'm with the older crowd, big brother showed me how
To make my momma proud, look how it turned out
But let me get back on my bullshit
To be a player yo you had to learn to pull shit, yo
Cause it was crazy how we hooked up
I looked up, found my face in her butt like what the fuck?
'Stop! What you doin? Get yo' face out my fanny!'
Tuckin her shirt in, so um I wouldn't see her panties
We laughed, and that was the beginnin of a past
that keep on huntin my ass, now who the asshole?"

2/9/2004 1:52:00 PMCongratulations!!Los Angeles, CA - Last night St. Louis' own Murphy Lee took home a Grammy award for "Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group" for the #1 hit, "Shake Ya Tailfeather." "Shake Ya Tailfeather" the summer hit of 2003 features Nelly, P. Diddy and Murphy Lee, the youngest member of Nelly's platinum-selling five member unit the St. Lunatics. The Grammy-winning song appears on Murphy Lee's gold-certified solo debut, Murphy's Law (Derrty Entertainment/Universal Records) as well as on the Bad Boys II soundtrack (Bad Boy Records).
The win comes as Universal Records launches Lee's next single, "Luv Me Baby" also from Murphy's Law. The song, featuring Sleepy Brown (who also guests on Outkast's "The Way You Move") was produced by Jazze Pha and is off to a strong start. Last week, the song was the #1 "Most Added" record at the crossover radio format, an indication that Murphy Lee's star is on the rise. His current breakout single "Wat Da Hook Gon Be" featuring Jermaine Dupri is a solid hit at radio and was a top request at BET. It is presently in heavy rotation at MTV.

10/3/2003 9:06:00 AMMurphy Lee- Murphy's LawAnything that can go wrong will go wrong. That's Murphy's Law as we've come to know it. But it's not quite the way Murphy Lee looks at life. Or at music.
With his standout verses on Nelly's Batter Up, Rock the Mic remix with Beanie Sigel and Freeway and Air Force Ones, the St. Lunatics rapper is proving that when he gets behind the mic, everything is bound to go right; some have witnessed just that when he dropped that crazy verse on the Welcome To Atlanta Remix with Jermaine Dupri, Puffy and Snoop Dogg. In fact, Murph's smooth, stunning performances throughout Nelly's debut album, 2000's 9x platinum "Country Grammar;" the St. Lunatic's first album, 2001's platinum "Free City" and Nelly's 2002's 6X platinum "Nellyville," have established him as a star in his own right.

What kind of title is that, we wondered. "It's a different song, it's like a 'Rappers Delight.' It's something every rapper wants to do, just go in and write some versus, and not worry about a hook, because the hook is what gets the radio and the clubs, it's all about the hook. But these versus, I was like 'This beat is so crazy.' Jermaine just threw me this beat that was retarded almost, so I went in there and wrote the versus real quick. I woke up that morning and I was just like, 'I'm going to ask myself What Da Hook Gon Be?' And just do it like that. And just tell everybody what its really about." Murphy Lee's "Shake Ya Tailfeather" is now in its fourth week atop the Billboard chart.9/26/2003 1:31:00 PMMURPHY LEE'S RED HOT RIPLETSLots of rappers get into non-musical sidelines once they hit it big - mainly clothing. Freshly minted St. Louis star Murphy Lee, however - who'll be starting his fourth week atop the Billboard chart on Monday with his debut single, "Shake Ya Tail Feather" - is taking a different tack - he's getting into snack food. "Red Hot Riplets, that's my new potato chips, it's coming out to stores nationwide. It's a St. Louis potato chip. St. Louis barbecue sauce, never been out of St. Louis, made by O-V-N, I now just partnered up with them, so we're going to try and take it nationwide. Red Hot Riplets is what's up." Murphy Lee and his mentor, Nelly, and the rest of the St. Lunatics are about to set off on a tour of Europe...and Japan.9/12/2003 3:59:00 PMCheck Out SoHood.com's Interview With Murphy LeeSoHood.com got an opportunity to interview Murphy Lee about his debut album "Murphy's Law" set to hit stores September 23.
